What happens to your print before it ships

The printing is the part everybody pictures, and it is not the part that decides whether you like the result. A part comes off the build plate wet, soft, still wearing its supports, and it is genuinely not finished — it is closer to a casting that has just been knocked out of its mold. What happens over the next few hours is most of the difference between a good print and a disappointing one.

It comes off wet

Every surface is coated in uncured resin, and every hollow is holding it. That liquid has to come off before anything else happens, because resin that stays behind cures into a tacky film that dulls detail and never quite goes away.

So the part gets washed. Hollow parts drain through the holes they were designed with — this is why drain holes matter — and recesses get worked at until the surface stops being slick. Rushing this step is the single most common reason a resin print looks slightly wrong in a way nobody can name.

It is still soft

Straight out of the wash, a part has been shaped but not finished hardening. It will flex under its own weight, and a thin projection will take a set if you leave it lying on its side.

UV post-curing finishes the reaction the printer started. The part reaches its actual strength, its actual color, and its final surface. It also stops being chemically active — this is the step that makes a print non-toxic to handle, which is why we do it on every part rather than only on the ones that will be touched a lot.

Cure time is a judgment call, not a timer setting. Too little and the part stays soft. Too much and some resins grow brittle and shift color. Thin, detailed pieces and thick, solid ones do not want the same treatment.

The supports come off

Supports are removed by hand, and where they touched the part they leave a witness mark. Those marks were placed deliberately during setup — on a base, inside a shell, on a face that will be glued or hidden — so that removing them does not cost you anything you were going to look at.

Then the faces that will show get sanded. Not every surface: the ones a person will actually see. A model arrives support-free, and the underside is where the evidence lives.

Then somebody looks at it

This is the step with no equipment. One of us picks the part up, turns it under the light, and decides whether it is good enough to send.

Sometimes it is not. A support scar landed somewhere it should not have. A fine feature did not fully form. Something warped during cure. When that happens the part gets printed again, and you generally never hear about it, because the first one was our problem rather than yours.

That is also the step that catches the harder conversation — the one where the geometry itself will not print well at this scale, no matter how many times we run it. You hear about that immediately. Preferably before you have paid, which is why a person opens your file the same day it arrives instead of the morning the job is due.

Why the fuss

Because a part that is nearly right is a part somebody has to be polite about, and we would rather not put anyone in that position. There is a longer answer on why the standard sits where it does — it has less to do with our reputation than with whose name we are really working under.

The short version: it goes in the box when it is right. Prints start at $29 and ship free anywhere in the USA. Standard turnaround is 2–4 days, and if that is too slow, call us — rush work is a phone call.
